How IVF works
Six stages, explained simply — what happens at each one, and roughly when.
Days 1–12 (approx.)
For about 10–14 days, daily hormone injections help several eggs mature at once. Ultrasound scans and blood tests show how the follicles are growing, so doses can be adjusted.
Around day 14
Under short anaesthesia, a fine needle guided by ultrasound collects the eggs from the follicles. It usually takes under half an hour, and you go home the same day.
Same day
In the laboratory, each egg is placed with prepared sperm (conventional IVF), or a single sperm is injected into each egg (ICSI) when that suits your case better.
Days 1–5 in the lab
Fertilised eggs grow into embryos inside the incubator. Embryologists check their development every day; some reach the blastocyst stage by day 5.
Day 3 or day 5
A thin, soft catheter places the selected embryo inside the uterus. It needs no anaesthesia and takes a few minutes. Suitable extra embryos can be frozen for later, with your consent.
About 14 days later
A blood test (beta-hCG) about two weeks after the transfer shows whether the embryo has implanted. Our team stays in touch through the wait and plans the next step with you, whatever the result.

A clinical examination and, where appropriate, a transvaginal ultrasound to look at the uterus and ovaries.

The outcome of IVF depends on several factors including the woman’s age, the underlying cause of infertility, egg quality, sperm quality, and embryo quality. No clinic can promise a pregnancy. A complete IVF cycle typically takes 4–6 weeks from the start of ovarian stimulation medications to embryo transfer. The process begins with 10–14 days of hormone injections to stimulate your ovaries, followed by egg retrieval, fertilization in our laboratory, 3–5 days of embryo culture, and embryo transfer. You’ll have a pregnancy test approximately two weeks after embryo transfer. The complete timeline including initial consultation, diagnostic testing, and treatment preparation may span 2–3 months.
