Minimally Invasive Laparoscopy

Laparoscopy is a surgical procedure utilized for diagnosing and treating a range of conditions related to infertility, such as endometriosis, fibroids, blocked fallopian tubes, ovarian cysts, and pelvic pain. It grants surgeons a direct view of the uterus, tubes, ovaries, and other pelvic organs.

Our specialized fertility experts in Virginia have received extensive training in laparoscopic surgery and can even perform tubal reversal surgery using this technique.

In addition to tubal ligation reversal, laparoscopy is indispensable for diagnosing conditions like endometriosis and pelvic adhesions. Furthermore, we offer endoscopic surgical treatments for numerous conditions, many of which previously necessitated major surgery. These specialised instruments and minimally invasive procedures have transformed the field of fertility treatment.

The laparoscopic procedure typically requires general anesthesia and can vary in duration from 45 minutes to several hours, contingent on the specific conditions being addressed. The process commences with a small incision just below the navel. A specialised needle is inserted to inflate the abdominal cavity with carbon dioxide gas. The laparoscope, equipped with a camera, is then introduced through this incision, and up to four small incisions may be necessary, depending on the complexity of the laparoscopy.

Risks and Complications of Laparoscopy:

While complications from laparoscopy are generally rare, all surgical procedures come with risks, including injury to organs like the bowel, stomach, urinary bladder, or uterus. Fortunately, the risk of serious complications is less than 1%, particularly when performed by highly trained fertility surgeons.

Post Laparoscopy Recovery : What to Expect

  • Patients are discharged with a prescription for pain medication after laparoscopy.
  • Common side effects on the evening of the procedure include mild discomfort and nausea due to anesthesia.
  • The day after laparoscopy, patients may still experience mild abdominal discomfort and discomfort in the shoulder or anterior chest.
  • Right shoulder pain may result from the gas used to distend the abdominal cavity.
  • Chest and shoulder discomfort are due to irritation of the diaphragm muscles used for breathing.
  • These side effects typically resolve within 48 hours.
  • Mild vaginal bleeding is common for about 24 hours post-laparoscopy.
  • Full recovery to normal activity is expected within 3-4 days.
  • Patients should feel progressively stronger with diminishing pain throughout the recovery period.
  • If patients experience worsening symptoms, they should contact our office immediately.
