Blocked fallopian tubes are one of the more common reasons a couple has difficulty conceiving, and they often cause no symptoms at all. This guide explains what the tubes do, what causes blockage and hydrosalpinx, how they are diagnosed, which treatments are considered, and when IVF is advised.

The Short Answer

What to Know Blocked fallopian tubes stop the egg and sperm from meeting, and they are a common cause of female infertility. There are often no symptoms, and the diagnosis is made through tube tests such as an HSG. Treatment depends on where the block is, how damaged the tubes are, your age and your partner's sperm. When both tubes are blocked or damaged, IVF, which bypasses the tubes, is often advised. A tube swollen with fluid (hydrosalpinx) may need treatment before IVF.

What Do the Fallopian Tubes Do?

The fallopian tubes are two thin tubes that link the ovaries to the uterus. After ovulation, the tube picks up the egg and carries it toward the uterus. Fertilisation normally takes place inside the tube, and the early embryo then travels to the uterus to implant.

If the tube is blocked or damaged, the egg and sperm may not meet, or the embryo may not travel properly to the uterus.

What Causes Blocked Tubes?

  • Pelvic infection — Infections that spread to the pelvis can scar the tubes. See pelvic inflammatory disease and infertility.
  • Past infections such as tuberculosis — Some past infections can damage the tubes without ever causing clear symptoms.
  • Endometriosis — It can cause scarring and adhesions around the tubes. See endometriosis and fertility.
  • Previous pelvic or abdominal surgery — Scar tissue can form after an operation.
  • A previous ectopic pregnancy — A pregnancy in the tube can damage it.
  • Tubal ligation — A deliberate block. See conceiving after tubal ligation.

Symptoms

Blocked tubes often cause no symptoms. Some people have pelvic pain, painful periods or abnormal discharge, particularly if infection or endometriosis is the cause. For many, the first sign is simply difficulty conceiving, which is why tube testing is part of a standard fertility assessment. See female infertility diagnosis.

What Is Hydrosalpinx?

A hydrosalpinx is a fallopian tube that is blocked at the far end and filled with fluid, which makes it swollen. It is often caused by past infection or endometriosis, and it can sometimes be seen on an ultrasound scan.

The fluid can leak back into the uterus. This can interfere with implantation and reduce the chance of IVF working, which is why a hydrosalpinx is often dealt with before an embryo transfer.

How Blocked Tubes Are Diagnosed

Test What it shows Notes
HSG (hysterosalpingogram) An X-ray with dye shows whether the tubes are open A common first test. See HSG and sonosalpingography
Sonosalpingography An ultrasound with fluid shows whether the tubes are open Avoids X-rays
Pelvic ultrasound May show a swollen tube (hydrosalpinx) Cannot always show whether tubes are open
Laparoscopy with dye A small camera looks at the tubes and pelvis directly Used when other tests are unclear or when treatment is planned

Types of Blockage

  • Near the uterus — A block where the tube meets the uterus. It is sometimes caused by debris and can occasionally be cleared.
  • At the far end — A block near the ovary, often with scarring or a hydrosalpinx.
  • One tube or both — If only one tube is blocked, the other may still work.

Treatment Options

Your doctor will recommend a plan according to the type and position of the block, your age, your ovarian reserve and your partner's sperm quality.

  • Monitoring and trying naturally — If one tube is open and healthy, and other factors are normal, natural conception may remain possible.
  • Tubal surgery — Some blocks can be treated with surgery, depending on where they are and how much damage there is. Results vary, and surgery is not suitable for everyone.
  • Treating a hydrosalpinx before IVF — Removing the affected tube or blocking it can improve the chance of implantation.
  • IUI — This is only suitable if at least one tube is healthy and open. See IUI vs IVF.
  • IVF — Advised when both tubes are blocked or damaged, when surgery is unlikely to help, or when other factors are present.

When Is IVF Needed?

IVF is often advised when both tubes are blocked or badly damaged, when a hydrosalpinx is present, when previous tubal surgery has not worked, or when age or other fertility factors make waiting unwise. In IVF, fertilisation takes place in the laboratory, so the tubes are not needed. See the IVF process step by step and fertility treatment options in India.

IUI will not work if both tubes are blocked, because the egg and sperm still need to meet in a working tube. See IUI failure reasons.

Ectopic Pregnancy: An Important Warning

Damaged tubes increase the chance that a pregnancy implants in the tube instead of the uterus. This is called an ectopic pregnancy, and it needs urgent care. If you have a positive pregnancy test with one-sided pelvic pain, bleeding, dizziness or fainting, contact your doctor or go to a hospital straight away. Tell your doctor that you have a tubal problem as soon as you become pregnant, so an early scan can be arranged.

Can You Get Pregnant With One Blocked Tube?

Often, yes. If the other tube is open and healthy, and ovulation and sperm quality are normal, natural conception is possible. An egg can sometimes be picked up by the tube on the opposite side. Your doctor will check that the remaining tube is healthy and will advise how long it is reasonable to try.

Can Blocked Tubes Be Prevented?

Not always, but some steps help. Seek care promptly for pelvic pain, abnormal discharge or a suspected pelvic infection, and complete the treatment your doctor advises. Endometriosis should be managed under medical guidance. Regular check-ups also allow earlier detection.

Common Myths About Blocked Tubes

  • Myth: "Blocked tubes mean you can never conceive." — Many people with blocked tubes can conceive with treatment, including IVF.
  • Myth: "Home or herbal remedies can open blocked tubes." — There is no reliable evidence for this, and delays can cost valuable time. Please speak to a specialist.
  • Myth: "Blocked tubes always cause pain." — Many people have no symptoms at all.
  • Myth: "IUI works even if both tubes are blocked." — IUI needs at least one open and healthy tube.
  • Myth: "A hydrosalpinx can be ignored before IVF." — A hydrosalpinx can reduce the chance of implantation, so your doctor may advise treating it first.

When to See a Doctor

If you have been trying to conceive without success, have a history of pelvic infection, endometriosis, abdominal surgery or an ectopic pregnancy, or have been told that your tubes may be blocked, speak to a fertility specialist. A consultation can confirm the position of the tubes, and your doctor can then explain which treatments suit you. If you have severe one-sided pelvic pain or bleeding with a positive pregnancy test, seek urgent care.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are blocked fallopian tubes?

Blocked fallopian tubes are tubes that do not allow the egg and sperm to meet, or the embryo to travel to the uterus. They are a common cause of female infertility.

What are the symptoms of blocked fallopian tubes?

Often there are none. Some people have pelvic pain, painful periods or abnormal discharge. The main sign is difficulty conceiving.

How are blocked tubes diagnosed?

Through tests such as an HSG, sonosalpingography, a pelvic ultrasound or a laparoscopy with dye.

Can you get pregnant with blocked fallopian tubes?

If both tubes are blocked, natural pregnancy is unlikely, but IVF can bypass the tubes. If only one tube is blocked, natural pregnancy may still be possible.

What is hydrosalpinx?

A hydrosalpinx is a blocked tube filled with fluid. It can reduce the chance of IVF working, so it may need treatment before an embryo transfer.

Can blocked tubes be opened naturally?

There is no reliable evidence that home or herbal remedies open blocked tubes. Speak to a specialist about the options.

Does IUI work with blocked tubes?

Only if at least one tube is healthy and open. If both are blocked, IUI will not work, and IVF is usually advised.

Is there a risk of ectopic pregnancy with damaged tubes?

Yes. Damaged tubes increase the chance of an ectopic pregnancy, so tell your doctor early in pregnancy and seek urgent care for one-sided pain or bleeding.
